There are a few good reasons to root your android phone: remove bloatware, install special apps, if you are like me and are working on developing apps and want to see what you are doing, or all of the above and then some.
I started writing a post earlier containing my notes from rooting my Droid X, basically a compilation of my research on the subject, but after a while it turned into a rather long guide including step-by-step instructions for those of you looking to attempt the same.
